The prospect of 25 primary school children making hummus, holding a ‘feast for the gods’ and making Roman numerals with bread sticks was as daunting, entertaining and amusing as it sounds. This was our plan for the second-to-last week of teaching Latin to an after-school group of Year 2-5 pupils, and it was certainly rewarding to see not only the fun that they had mixing the chickpeas, but also the making of the Roman numerals out of the bread sticks – which were then quickly used to eat the hummus as well. This was a particularly entertaining lesson to teach at the school and we had as much fun as the pupils did.
It was even more gratifying to then see the pupils reuse what they had learnt here and complete many Roman numeral maths equations in our last lesson of the semester. We received lots of feedback in which the students said they very much enjoyed this activity and would have liked to have even done more of this. We received even more uplifting feedback when one student claimed these Latin lessons were one of the main reasons that they enjoyed coming to school, and they looked forward to returning to them after Christmas.
Teaching at this school in the first semester was a very enjoyable and illuminating experience, and I now very much look forward to the teaching module next semester.
